A quick trip and lots of family!

In July I went down to Fairhope, AL for my Grandmothers suprise 80th birthday party. It was a very quick trip and lots of driving since my husband ended up having to stay and work that weekend. We headed out Thursday night and got in Friday around 10 if I remember correctly. A good friend of the families had given out her guest house for some of us to stay in and that was the first place we headed for a quick nap. The guest house was amazing and right on the bluff overlooking the water. Here are a few pictures of the house and the walk down to the water.

After a short nap we went out and had lunch at a great little health food resturant and then spent the evening over at my Aunt and Uncles house. It was so wonderful to spend time with family and get to see some of my cousins as well. It had been far to long. It was neat to show Ryan some of the places I came when I was a child on the summer trips here. I also found the Coffee Loft, which provided much needed caffeine and wonderful coffee.

Saturday we spent some time on the water and then went and had lunch with my Dad and his girlfriend and this great local seafood place. It was sad to see that signs that soon they would no longer be open all the time due to running out of seafood because of the oil. You don't see it much on the news anymore but there on the gulf it was a common topic of conversation and you could see the loss of business and jobs everywhere as well as the oil booms.

The surprise party was Saturday afternoon and was so wonderful, Grandma had no idea and family had driven in from all over the states. The only people missing were my brother and one other cousin. Ryan had not really ever met this side of my family and he had a blast. He wasn't ready to go home when we had to leave Sunday and followed some of my cousins around almost the whole time. Once he found people that would play video games with him he was hooked :) It was fun to watch him around everyone. Each time my Aunt would ask him a question he would look first to my cousin to see what his answer would be.

Washington trip

It has taken me a long time to get around to a blog about my personal time in WA this spring, but here it is and I did not do well on cutting down the images sooo enjoy the massive post. From the second the ground came into view heading into the Seattle Airport I was in love with the color that was everywhere as well as all the varying architecture. I did not get to spend any time in Seattle proper and will have to make another trip for that, I also did not have time to see a wonderful friend that lives in the city either (another trip excuse as well). I spent most of the trip in Burlington, a bit on Anacortes, and the rest on Shaw Island. Here are some pictures from the trip.

I think I am almost caught up, or at least close enough I can feel it. I have some personal trips to blog about as well as some amazing scenery images from WA and some family pictures. I love being able to photograph a family as it grows and changes. I did R's newborn pictures and was really excited to be able to photography him once again. Isn't he just adorable! His mom wanted a more urban feel to the shoot and came totally prepared with some cute outfits that worked great.

The beautiful Katie DeWinter was down in this part of the country to do pictures for PDT and we were lucky enough to have our family portraits done while she was down here. Check out more of her amazing work here www.katiedewinter.com . She is also the one that did all of the individual portraits I am now using.

We had talked some on facebook, but this was the first time we had actually met. She is such a wonderful person and really made me feel comfortable on the other side of the camera (which I am normally not). If you live in her area make sure to look her up if you need pictures done. Her eye and use of light is truly a gift. I consider her a friend and really look forward to more time together in the future.

Another dear friend of mine I was able to see while on the trip and who allowed me to stay at their place while out on Shaw. I had never gotten to meet her husband or their two precious girls and it was great. The girls are full of so much personality and J was just as beautiful as ever. I have a very strong feeling that our husbands will get along famously when they meet :) We used to pretend that we were sisters growing up because we always thought that we looked a like. From the minute I saw her it was like we had only just seen each other the week before and not 14 years ago. It will not be that long again!

It was so wonderful seeing all sort of people that I had not seen for 7-14 years but had grown up with. It was even more special that they allowed me to take their family portraits while I was there. Friday had me on the ferry and heading to Shaw Island. My first family session there was the G family.Each of the sessions while on my trip included lots of individual mini sessions, but I am posting them together with the family images. The skies cleared and the weather for my stay on Shaw was beautiful. I also came home with a jar of some of the best apple butter I have ever had.

Talk about a dream of a location. Back out of Anacortes Island for a senior session with the breathtaking J. This young lady is gorgeous, and was so much fun to shoot. She was a bit nervous to start with but I don't know why because she is a pro in front of the camera.

The evening of the first day in Burlington I did family pictures for this beautiful family. It was sooo cold out, and coming from the TX heat just that morning talk about a change. We went out to Anacortes Island to this beautiful little inlet on the water. The children were such troopers with the wind and cold too.

The first week in June included a 4 day trip out to Seattle, WA and the surrounding areas. I had been waiting for this trip since the second I bought the ticket and it couldn't come fast enough. Flying in to the Seattle Airport I was amazed at how lush and green everything was, talk about not being in TX anymore. I took a shuttle out to Burlington where I spent a couple days with one of my dearest friends (who I had not seen in 7 years!) We have known each other since we were about 5 years old, and it was a blast to catch up and get to know her children, all six of them :) The stay was not long enough and I hope to be able to make it out again next year.

Shortly after the PDT show I realized that the shutter switch on my camera was failing. I did not have time to send it in before my trip to Seattle, WA and rather then cross my fingers and hope it lasted through the trip and all the session I had while up there I decided to invest in the camera I had been wanting. I got the Canon 5D mark ii and wow!! I have not regretted it one bit. Here is a pictures of my new baby.

I know that I have been busy and way behind in blogging, but I am now attempting to catch up and even post all the way back to where I left off. Our son is a dancer, and loves everything there is about dance. He would stay at the studio on days we do not need to be there if he could. We had scheduled this session for an early Friday morning and according to the weather channel it did not look like we had the cooperation of good weather. We played it by ear up till the last minute, and ended up with a gorgeous morning and great lighting. It did not even start to sprinkle till we were done. I have to say that Henry is one happy baby and was all smiles this morning. Thank you for letting me spend some time with your family and capture these moments for you. Here is your sneak peak.

Wardrobe Wednesday

I have loved looking at the installments each week and when asked to be a guest contributer was nervous and excited. Make sure to check back in the coming weeks for more exciting installments!

As a guest contributer this week I decided to put together some outfits that would work for a family session, but that could also be paired up to use in a sibling shoot, as a couple, or any other combinations as well. I started with the necklace which is not the normal place for me to start, but when you find a piece you love this just goes to show you can start anywhere. The colors in the necklace are beautiful and give a lot of a range for the other pieces. For shooting just the couple take out the necklace for more of a focus on the couple and the muted colors in a few shots as well. When the whole family is together the necklace is not the center because of the colors in the girls dress. For the men I stayed very casual for ease and versatility. Thank you to all the amazing photographers who are main contributers to Wardrobe Wednesday for allowing me to put something together this week.

I had never met Kristin before, but new right away that we were going to have a great time together. South Side Preview

Last Sunday I was able to spend the afternoon with a friend and have this lovely young lady as our model. We ran all around South Side and had a blast just playing with different lighting situations and exploring new areas. Here are a few previews from the shoot. I have got to be one of the worst bloggers ever...I stalk all these other wonderful blogs and then take forever to update on my own. For this I really do apologize and am working on fixing it. I have come to realize that one of the things that makes me put off posting is the time and trouble for getting photos ready for my blog posts. I am researching blogging boards/layouts that will make it faster and easier in hopes of better blogging habits. I would love suggestions from all you wonderful blogging people and photographers. I was blessed to help welcome home someone I knew when I was growing up and wanted to share the pictures with you all. If you do a search for R&R flights at DFW airport you can find out when the planes come in. They come in almost every day and if you ever have the time please go out and support out troops coming home on leave (even if you do not know anyone). You can even get vouchers in the airport for free parking when you are there to support our troops! The support that was there this morning was wonderful, and also very emotional. Thank you to all who have served and are serving, you are loved and prayed for every day by so many.

Trendy Camera Strap

I got my first Trendy Camera Strap this weekend and LOOOVE it, I can't wait to use it on a shoot! I will post some pictures at a later date as I am still working out some software kinks, but check their site out. Green is my favorite color so I went with this one. Let me just say that it is the most comfortable strap ever!!! It is going to make a huge difference, and it looks awesome on top of it. My husband humored me by trying it on, but even he couldn't believe how comfortable it was.

Wow I can't believe that it is actually 2010! I am so very excited for what this new year has in store for my family and my business, and hopefully I will work on my blogging skills as they are still lacking lol.

I have met some great people in the latter part of 2009 and I look forward to building relationships with them and getting to know them better. I also can't wait to network more and put myself out there even when is scares me to death at times. I think some of those times that are scary end up being important and wonderful if you do not let fear stand in your way.

I am learning to accept that I am never going to be strong at the "business" side of things but that I can get better and learn more and every little bit helps. There are so many resources out there that I have not made the most of and I plan on changing that. God has blessed me with so much and I that I am able to even pick up a camera is such a blessing. I hope in the upcoming year that I can learn to listen more and talk less and use my gift not only for others, but also to glorify God. This probably appears as rambling, but hopefully as time goes on I will become better at putting my thoughts into words. I have so much going on in my head right now that I think things are overlapping when I try to voice them.

Clause 4 Paws

Ryan is taking dance at The Plano Dance Theatre and he is really enjoying the challenge. This year their Christmas show was Clause 4 Paws and benefited the no kill shelter in Carrolton, TX. They are an amazing group of people and do so much for the kids. I am learning about action shots and stage lighting without flash and definitely taking baby steps, but I am having a lot if fun learning so far out of my comfort zone. This time I ended up renting a lens (Canon's 70-200mm 2.8) that was better under the conditions and I had a lot of fun playing with it. Shawn told me not to cry when I took it back along with the 40D body I was using as well and I must say although it was hard not a tear was shed. I have plans to get my hands on a 40D in the very near future though and use my trusty Rebel XT and 10D as backups. Here are a few shots from the dress rehearsal of the incredibly talented dancers and of course some of Ryan :D we are so proud of him.

Two Amazing Women and Some Great Boots!

If you have not met The Skitzy Chicks aka Melinda and Carrie then you don't know what you are missing. These women have a gift for laughter, beautiful smiles, and most of all a heart for God that I can only hope to one day have. They were so much fun to photograph and I am sure I missed some great shots because I was laughing too hard to hold the camera stable. It was a great afternoon and I feel truly blessed to have been able to document it. Melinda had these awesome boots that she changed into and so we had to get some shots of those as well, I mean seriously....they were amazing :)

I hope that you all have a wonderful day and that you have a lot to be thankful for on the holiday. I am thankful for so many things that I could never name them all but I did want to mention a few that I have been thinking about a lot this last week.

I am thankful for my family and the fact that I am blessed with such a wonderful husband and son, for the fact that I can use my right hand and can still take pictures, that I am building a relationship with my Dad again and that my brother has done the same, that I still get to see my Great Great Grandfather and Ryan has gotten to know him as well, that God is always working on teaching me acceptance and that some days I actually feel like I have it, for all the friends I have made in the last few months, that we are able to support Ryan and his love of dance, and for each and every person in my life as well as thousands of other things I have not mentioned as I must go eat breakfast prepared by said wonderful husband !

I have, on and off over the last year or two, really tried to figure out a logo for Mountainpony, or even just a stylized way to write it (which is a logo too but you know what I mean). I have finally come to the conclusion that I have a complete and total mind block when it comes to this and need help. This is where you guys come in, or anyone else that is interested for that matter. I am holding a contest for a logo design!

So break out your pencils, computers, or whatever it is that you use and see what you can come up with. At the end of the year I will pick my favorite, or if I can't decide, I will pick my top three and let you all in on the decision as well.

And for all those people that wonder where such a strange name as Mountainpony came from and just have not asked.. here is a bit of the story behind the name. A lot of you grew up with me and so it just makes sense but all that seems like so long ago and almost in another life. I grew up in the mountains of MT and spent more time on the back of a horse than I probably did on my own two feet. This in itself would explain the name as it embodies who I am and the life that will always call to me no matter where I may be at any given time. One of my biggest struggles in life is to be content with where I am and God is always teaching me this or reminding me when I start to yearn for things I cannot have at the moment. If I was not on a horse when I was young chances were you would find me with my nose in a book or even hiding out in the bathroom reading when I should have been doing schoolwork (Mom knew this though so it wouldn't last for long :) On of my favorite books was this old paperback I found at an antique shop and it was called Mountain Pony and the Pinto Colt. The books are from 1946 and there are at least two others in the series that I know of. The book had loose pages in it but it was all there and although in very sad condition I still have it and cherish it in my collection. So it is through the combined title of a favorite childhood book and the fact that it also sums up everything I grew up with and love that Mountainpony was born. So there you have it lol, a country girl who loves the mountains, her horses, and her books.

Sunday Morning we skipped church (I know..we didn't want to) as it was the only time where it was actually light out that we could get all three of us together. Shawn actually skipped his college class as well so we could do the pictures. We ended up having a wonderful morning together and brunch at a nice restaurant close by to where we did the pictures. I was so excited when Shawn told me he wasn't going to class as it meant we could all ride in the same car together (its the little things), it really was a wonderful morning together as a family.

This last Tuesday I had to make the trek to have my hand/wrist therapy sooo early in the morning (I was late too..I hate being late). After therapy I called my wonderful friend who I did know was awake and we decided that we would go to Ikea after I picked her up since she was without a car for the day. I was so excited to have therapy on a day when Crystal didn't work (it NEVER happens I tell you). Upon pulling up to Ikea and being thrilled at the lack of people in the parking lot it dawns on us it is only 9am (We really should be in bed!). With an hour to kill and my camera in the car we set off in search of some of the fun cowboy statues around the area that mark on of the great trails of the west that the cattle and horses used to be driven on. We never did find the particular statues of the horses that Crystal and I both remember seeing but we found this jewel of a park right in the middle of everything that was amaaazing. We walked around for about an hour maybe a bit more and it was the most beautiful day! I took pictures of Ryan and Crystal and she was kind enough to return the favor and take some pics of Ryan and I as well as some for my new business cards (you can't see those). Here is a peak into our day. I will write about the rest of our day in another post as we did a whole lot of other really cool stuff but that has to wait for another time.

On Saturday I was able to go and visit some friends of ours who were just blessed with a beautiful baby boy. Their story is not one I will go into on here but lets just say that God is so awesome in his glory and love. I was able to visit a bit and of course hold baby Rylin (who I didn't want to let go). I also just happened to have my camera in the car and of course snapped a few impromptu pictures of the new addition to the family. Duke was not as willing to be my subject though.

Sparkle, Sequins, and More...

The other weekend I was able to do a shoot for an amazing belly dancer and WOW! was it fun. Costumes, sparkle, headdresses, and even a mask coupled with a great model. I mean really, what more could a girl ask for? I definitely need to work on my indoor photography and what I have on hand as well as becoming more comfortable working in certain light conditions (*someday I will have the Canon 50 1.2!), but we made it work.

I had the opportunity Sunday afternoon to go downtown and shoot a very talented group of young musicians. I thoroughly enjoyed this and could probably stay down there for weeks and not even come close to finding all the cool photo spots. I look forward to being in that area again some time in the future. I had such an amazing time photographing a friend of mine this weekend! She is so beautiful inside and out and I think I laughed more than I had in a long time while we were shooting. It was a bit on the chilly side and we had to tromp through the mud in some places but with a change of shoes, a towel, and a willing subject I could not have asked for anything more. We even got a few with her husband as well even though he only had a few minutes. Here are a few teaser shots for the couple.

I had the opportunity to take some pictures of a friend's daughter as the light was leaving us and dark setting in. I need a lot more practice with these light conditions, but we got some really neat shots using both natural light, flash, and at times the car headlights. I hope you enjoy then, she was a pleasure to shoot and I had a great time.

Well okay, I guess it is for others as well and to save spamming facebook with all the pictures and overloading my photos on there, but mostly for my Mom who is wonderful and loving and has yet to be on facebook :P

I am starting to pick up my camera again. I wouldn't say my wrist is better, but I just can't stand not taking pictures. I am sure that at times I will have to relax a bit and lay off, but not for right now. I will start this blog off with a few pictures taken the beginning of the month right in the path of an incoming storm. One of these I entered in a contest and am keeping my fingers crossed.
